Research School Network: ASYNCHRONOUS TRAINING COURSE: Cognitive Load Theory: SEND AVAILABLE FROM OCTOBER 2026

Grounded in the latest research and practical strategies, this asynchronous course explores how metacognition underpins effective learning, motivation, and independence.

This course is delivered asynchronously, allowing you to engage with it at your own pace. Each session includes:

> Video training with expert input and pause points for reflection
> A comprehensive workbook to guide learning and action planning
> Suggested readings and gap tasks to apply learning in your own context

Across the asynchronous modules, you will explore how to:

> Understand the principles of Cognitive Load Theory and their relevance to SEND
> Reduce extraneous load and scaffold intrinsic challenge to support working memory
> Apply the EEF’s ​‘Five-a-day’ approach to strengthen teaching for all learners
> Use modelling, scaffolding, and worked examples effectively
> Link CLT to metacognition, motivation and learning behaviours
> Plan, monitor and evaluate inclusive teaching with confidence
> Real-world examples and reflections from the Derby Research School and local practitioners
> Adapting Instructional Design ‑learn how to use strategies like chunking, dual coding, and worked examples to support memory and reduce overload without lowering challenge.
> Practical Planning Tools- access templates and tools to embed cognitive load principles into lesson planning, curriculum mapping, and adaptive teaching.
