Description

The Effective Professional Development guidance report, published less than a year ago by the EEF, has provided a much needed articulation of how best to help teachers develop their professional expertise. While the DFE standards for teachers’ professional development have been in existence since 2016, there has up to this point been a gap in terms of how to best design programmes to realise these standards.

Drawing on the existing research in this area, the guidance report gives the profession 14 mechanisms split into 4 categories for professional development. In focusing on mechanisms for professional development rather than the format or the programmes it allows those leading in this area to select from a series of tangible activities that provide the best bets of sustained professional development.

This training programme will delve into the mechanisms and provide examples for all of them that school leaders could use in professional development. The day will also involve an investigation of how this guidance report dovetails with the implementation guidance report.
