Description

The day will have two primary objectives: first to gain a thorough understanding of the principles of metacognition and self-regulated learning; and second to provide tangible examples of how metacognition can be realised in the classroom. The EEF metacognition and self-regulated guidance report will structure the day, with each of the seven recommendations unpicked and interpreted.

While the benefits to learning of effective metacognitive interventions have long been known, tuning the theory into changes in teacher practice and student thinking often proves difficult. Part of the reason for this is knowing what exactly to do with the principles. As a result, this training will include case studies of real interventions that have been used in both primary and secondary settings, giving attendees a range of strategies to take away. Two examples would be training on metacognitive modelling and metacognitive questioning. Both have the advantage of being adaptable to all subjects and phases and part of the day will be giving attendees the opportunity to contextualise these and other interventions to their particular settings.

This single-day training will be suitable both for classroom teachers looking to adapt their practice and for school leaders looking at whole-school implementation.
