Grounded in the latest research and practical strategies, this asynchronous course explores how metacognition underpins effective learning, motivation, and independence.
This course is delivered asynchronously, allowing you to engage with it at your own pace. Each session includes:
> Video training with expert input and pause points for reflection
> A comprehensive workbook to guide learning and action planning
> Suggested readings and gap tasks to apply learning in your own context
These resources are ideal for individual CPD, small group learning, or school-wide training. Designed to support whole-school improvement priorities, they can be led internally by T&L leads, SEND lead or used independently. There are 5 full CPD days worth of content in the course.
> What Makes a Word Worth Teaching? Exploring tiered vocabulary, subject specificity, and Alex Quigley’s principles to prioritise high-value words.
> Mapping Vocabulary Progression: Planning for coherence and challenge across year groups, with a focus on transition points.
> Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Recognising what holds vocabulary instruction back and how to ensure teaching moves beyond word lists and display walls.
> Cracking the Code: Morphology and Etymology. Using word roots, structures and patterns to make complex vocabulary more accessible and memorable.
> Deep Word Knowledge Across the Curriculum: Practical strategies for unlocking academic language in all subjects, drawing on the work of Deignan and Jones.
> What is Oracy? Defining oracy through the Voice 21 framework and Oracy Commission, and understanding its role in vocabulary development.
> Embedding Structured Talk: Developing classroom talk types and activities that build expressive language and reinforce word understanding.
> The Turn and Talk Framework: Introducing a flexible, research-informed tool based on the Frayer Model to integrate vocabulary and oracy in everyday teaching.
> Planning for Whole-School Impact: Action planning for literacy and subject leads to embed vocabulary and oracy into curriculum, CPD, and classroom culture.
