“Whether it is primary or secondary, in maths or geography, disciplinary literacy plays out in reading, writing, vocabulary, and talk.” Alex Quigley
Disciplinary literacy is an approach to improving literacy across the curriculum. It recognises that literacy skills are both general and subject specific, emphasising the value of teaching students how to read, write and communicate effectively in a range of curriculum subjects.
Disciplinary literacy acknowledges that the language and the thinking are inextricably linked.
Language can enable complex thinking.
Language can communicate complex thinking.
But the thinking – and therefore the language – will look different in every subject discipline.
In this webinar, we’ll look at the concept of disciplinary literacy, before exploring concrete examples of how it might work in reading, writing and vocabulary.
