Literacy is fundamental for success in school and later life. Students who cannot read, write and communicate effectively are highly unlikely to access the challenging academic curriculum in secondary school and are more likely to have poor educational outcomes across all subjects.
Ruth Everett, Evidence Lead for Literacy, will help participants distil the seven recommendations of the EEF’s new guidance report ‘Improving Literacy in Secondary School’, explore associated evidence and consider how to effectively implement essential elements into the context of school policy and practice.
Literacy in secondary schools is NOT solely the preserve of English teachers, or literacy coordinators.
The emphasis on disciplinary literacy (literacy within subjects other than English) makes clear that every teacher communicates their subject through academic language. Reading, writing, speaking and listening are at the heart of knowing, learning and doing ANY subject.
Disciplinary literacy is an approach to improving literacy across the curriculum. It recognises that literacy skills are both general and subject specific, emphasising the value of supporting teachers of every subject to teach students how to read, write and communicate effectively
“By attending to the literary demands of their subjects, teachers increase their pupils’ chance of success in their subjects.”
Improving Literacy in Secondary Schools is the most recent guidance report from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). It aims to help secondary schools improve literacy in all subject areas. It provides seven recommendations related to reading, writing, talk, vocabulary development and supporting struggling students.
