: Deepening Understanding Through Disciplinary Talk Across the Curriculum How can we get students to talk like a Historian, Geographer, Mathematician, Scientist and Practical subjects?

There is good evidence that oral language, integrated with the disciplinary literacy curriculum of subjects can improve attainment for all students and can be an effective approach for improving outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

The quality of our students’ thinking is directly limited by the quality of their talk. In these sessions:

• We will examine how to move all students beyond surface-level discussion and answers by explicitly teaching the conventions of academic discourse unique to each discipline.
• We will explore how to teach students to talk, think, and argue like subject experts — be it a scientist, a historian, or a mathematician.
• This is a deep dive for leaders into the practicalities of making complex thinking visible.

We will hear from expert practitioners and leaders from each subject to consider what disciplinary talk looks like in their subject and how they make the most of oral language strategies in their subjects.

These sessions are for senior leaders and middle leaders of all specialisms.
