Teaching A-level pupils “skills for learning”

Ashby School are investigating whether a skills for learning course supports the academic attainment of Year 12 A-level pupils with relatively low prior attainment.

Challenge

Ashby School have noted that pupils progressing to A-level with relatively low prior attainment (GCSE APS 40-46) make significantly lower progress than their more able peers and achieve poorer outcomes than similar students nationally. They hypothesise these pupils may be struggling to adapt to the independent, self-motivated study required at A-level, and that the additional support and intervention many of these pupils received during GCSE studies may not have not equipped them with the skills required to be successful at A-level.

Innovation

A-level students with relatively low prior attainment will be taught the non-subject specific “skills for learning” required to be successful at A-level, including motivation, organisation, resilience, self-study and revision skills. This will be delivered through a series of sessions over one term:
