Research School Network: An introduction to the EEF Guide to Inclusive Teaching Three things practitioners love!

In July, the EEF published their guide to inclusive ‑teaching and it has been extremely well-received. Three things have really stood out from its use so far – from teachers and leaders across the sector – who we are working with. We thought that these early observations or insights were worth sharing.

1) Practitioners enjoy the fact the guidance makes it really clear that this is a two-part model with universal approaches sitting firmly at its heart. Inclusive teaching is not about making multiple adaptations which automatically lead to more learning (see Myth buster 1).

2) There is a clear emphasis on building in systematic reflection and review points to ascertain whether an adaptation or intervention is in fact accelerating progress or hindering it (linking heavily to the implementation guidance recommendation 1).

3) The interactive scenario-based training suite is leading to rich discussion between practitioners in relation to their inclusive practice. In professional development terms, the scenarios are facilitating that all important ​‘social support’ within and between professionals (linking to the Effective Professional Development guidance report).
