Join Will Allen for an engaging twilight session exploring how to strengthen Key Stage 3 reading through disciplinary literacy, targeted vocabulary instruction and structured support for reading complex academic texts.
Drawing on Recommendations 1, 2 and 3 from the EEF’s Improving Literacy in Secondary Schools guidance report, this session will share practical strategies, curriculum mapping approaches and research-informed insights to help students access challenging subject texts.
Framed through the lens of disadvantage, the session explores how careful text selection, explicit vocabulary teaching, scaffolding and library provision can accelerate progress and improve equity. Drawing on leadership in a high-disadvantage, high-EAL context, it will share effective approaches to building reading capability as a foundation for attainment across the curriculum and beyond.By the end of the session, participants will:
•Understand how disciplinary literacy improves access to complex subject texts
•Explore practical approaches to vocabulary instruction and curriculum text design
•Reflect on how scaffolding supports disadvantaged pupils to succeed in reading
•Take away strategies to strengthen reading across Key Stage 3 classrooms
This twilight is suitable for: KS3 teachers of any subject, English leads and KS3 leads.
Please be aware if booking within 24 hours of the selected event date, there is no guarantee that your booking will be secured.
