In September 2023, Schools Week shared that 1 in 3 teachers in England say they use generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, “to help with school work”. However, we know that there is limited hands-on, teacher-validated guidance available for new users on how to get the best out of ChatGPT in the classroom. There is a firm belief that generative AI tools show great promise in supporting teachers & tutors to prepare & deliver lessons, both by reducing preparation time & increasing lesson quality.
Here at Somerset Research School, based at The Blue School in Wells, we joined Cornwall Research School and a number of other schools and trusts across the country in trialling approaches to using and testing the use of ChatGPT for teaching. Shilen Tanna, our ‘Evidence Advocate for Interventions & Digital Technology’ led on this project, here at the school. We were supporting the work of The HG Foundation and Bain & Company in creating a guide which aims to support teachers who are new to ChatGPT to get the best out of it for lesson preparation & delivery. The two organisations are committed to testing the impact of this guide so will now explore running a randomised control trial on this guidance with the Education Endowment Foundation.
