We would like to thank Liverpool Hope University for hosting our annual conference. The speakers raised some challenging and stimulating questions regarding marking and feedback, and offered practical ways that schools could implement a variety of different forms of feedback. A new exciting venture, funded by Oxford University, was launched by Velda Elliot our first speaker: Hitting the mark’ (a review of classroom based innovations and research projects into marking) more details about how to become involved are below.

Phil Smith, HMI from Ofsted gave a detailed explanation about the rationale behind the new 2019 framework, which places emphasis on the curriculum delivered by schools.

Robin Hall gave an intriguing insight into the work of the Teacher Workload Unit’ at the DfE and highlighted key aspects from the independent review groups around the issue of workload.

Stuart Kime, from Evidence Based Education, raised the evocative question: Why mark? He detailed a cased study of what happened when English teachers stopped marking in a cluster of schools?

Harry Fletcher-Wood challenged delegates to think about whether less feedback could do more good.

We hope that all delegates found the day useful and thought provoking. Our next single issue conference will be happening soon – watch this space!
