Developing the literacy skills of secondary age students, across a range of different subjects, is a common challenge for secondary schools.
New EEF guidance presents 7 evidence informed recommendations for school leaders, emphasising the importance of disciplinary literacy.
Recommendation 1 – Prioritise ‘disciplinary literacy’ across the curriculum
Recommendation 2 – Provide targeted vocabulary instruction in every subject
Recommendation 3 – Develop students’ ability to read complex academic texts
Recommendation 4 – Break down complex writing tasks
Recommendation 5 – Combine writing instruction with reading in every subject
Recommendation 6 – Provide opportunities for structured talk
Recommendation 7 – Provide high quality interventions for struggling students
Our 3‑day training course explores the guidance with a view to providing strategic and practical approaches to support the implementation of these recommendations.
The training will be most beneficial for school leaders, heads of subjects and literacy co-ordinators.
