Research School Network: Literacy research trial opportunity

Hallam TSA, Sheffield are looking to recruit 3 secondary schools from South Yorkshire to a funded research project that will run during the academic year 2018/19. The aim of the project is to evaluate the impact of a particular approach to teaching English in Year 7, labelled ​‘Mastery English‘.

The project builds on work done in primary schools where English lessons have followed a prescribed structure, using high quality texts to support both reading and writing development. The lesson structure is six part: engage, introduce, consider and practice, going deeper, independent task, reflect. A further key aspect of the trial is that a single high quality text is used as the launch point for all other teaching activities in the lessons concerned. Trials in primary schools suggest that this intervention may result in improved progress in reading and funding as been secured to evaluate the impact of this approach within the secondary context.

Participating schools need to be using Accelerated Reader so that you have access to the STAR reading assessments that will be used to measure the impact of the intervention.
