This event is suitable for anyone interested in the impact that Covid has had on early years aged children by the time they start school. The session will be relevant for commissioners and strategic leaders working across the system as well as senior leaders and practitioners working in schools and settings.

Covid-19 has significantly disrupted children’s education, with the last normal school year for most children being the year 2018/19. It is too early to fully understand the impact this will have on children’s outcomes, but it is likely that the impact will be felt most keenly at the early stages of education when the fundamental building blocks are put in place. Of particular concern is children’s language and socioemotional development given the social isolation many children experienced over the course of two lockdowns.

The School Starters project investigates the impact of Covid-19 on children who started school in the Autumn term 2020/21, with a particular focus on language and socioemotional development.

In this talk Claudine will share initial findings from this project and next steps. She will also introduce the new ICICLES project; a three-year longitudinal study exploring the impact of Covid-19 on children’s outcomes in KS1.

Presented by Dr Claudine Bowyer-Crane, Associate Research Director at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

Claudine has been carrying out research in children’s reading and language development for over 20 years. For the past seven years, Claudine has been the language and
communication theme lead for the Better Start Bradford
project.

She is also co-author of the Nuffield Early Language Intervention, published by Oxford University Press.
