In this one-hour webinar, we’ll dive into the latest evidence on how manipulatives can support learning as a scaffold, share practical strategies for integrating them into lessons, and explore when and how to transition students toward greater independence. Packed with actionable examples and insights, this session will support you in both developing your understanding and strengthening your classroom practice.
Session objectives:
- Understanding how to use manipulatives purposefully and appropriately to have an impact.
- Understanding the importance of a clear rationale for using a particular manipulative or representation to teach a specific mathematical concept.
- Learn how to use manipulatives as a ‘scaffold’ that can be removed once independence is achieved.
Audience:
Teachers and leaders from primary, secondary and special schools with a responsibility for teaching/leading maths.

Jamie Heathcote
Evidence Lead in Education
Jamie is a highly experienced primary maths consultant who supports schools to deliver a mastery curriculum. He also works as an Every Child Counts Lead Trainer, Maths Hub work group lead, facilitator for the NPQLM programme with The Exchange Partnership and Maths Researcher for the Department of Education at Oxford University.
Drew Sherratt
Evidence Lead in Education
Drew is a Deputy Headteacher in a Doncaster secondary school where she oversees Teaching and Learning and Personal Development. She has held many other roles in her teaching career including Lead Practitioner, Curriculum Leader of Mathematics and Assistant Headteacher for Impact of Learning.
