We are always trying to ensure that we offer a range of CPD opportunities, so that teachers and leaders can engage with us at a level that suits them. For some, this might be a 3 day training programme, for others a twilight session or a presentation during an INSET day and for others it might involve a more sustained and bespoke programme of support. One other type of CPD we offer are one day workshops, that have a very specific focus on an area of evidence informed practice. These are very cost effective and time efficient and, as long as they are coupled with a well thought out plan around how it will be implemented and sustained back at school, can be very effective.

We have a variety of these on offer – details follow.

Subject specific Workshops

The 2014 evidence review What Makes Great Teaching?’ by The Sutton Trust, identified pedagogical content knowledge as having the strongest evidence in terms of improving student outcomes:

The most effective teachers have deep knowledge of the subjects they teach, and when teachers’ knowledge falls below a certain level it is a significant impediment to students’ learning. As well as a strong understanding of the material being taught, teachers must also understand the ways students think about the content, be able to evaluate the thinking behind students’ own methods, and identify students’ common misconceptions.

With this in mind we are offering subject specific workshops, exploring how we can apply the best available evidence around teaching and learning to specific subjects. Further details and booking information below:

English – led by Andy Tharby on 29th June 2020

Science – led by Shaun Allison on 25th March 2020

Geography – led by Ben Crockett on 18th March 2020

History – led by Chris Runeckles on 26th february 2020

PE – led by James Crane on 12th February 2020

Implementation

The EEF’s guidance report on Implementation has become one of the most downloaded and widely used guidance reports in the series so far. This is no surprise. Effective implementation is key to effective leadership:

Vision without implementation is hallucination”

– Thomas Edison

This one day workshop, aimed at school leaders, will go through the stages of effective implementation and support you with creating an implementation plan for a change you are looking to introduce with your own team.

This workshop will be led by Shaun Allison on 5th May. Details and booking here.

Becoming a Research Lead

More and more schools are creating a Research Lead’ role within their leadership structure, to ensure that an evidence informed approach is threading through all that they do. This workshop will examine:

Why a Research Lead role is so important for schools?
What does a Research Lead do?
How can you be an effective Research Lead?

The day will be led by Andy Tharby on 30th March. Details and booking information can be found here.

Making Every Lesson Count

In 2015Shaun Allison& Andy Tharby from the Durrington Research School wrote Making every lesson count’. This explores six evidence informed pedagogical principles to support great learning. Led by Shaun Allison (co-author of Making every lesson count’ and author of Making every science lesson count’) and Chris Runeckles (author of Making every history lesson count’), this workshop will explore the evidence behind these six principles and how they can be effectively implemented in the classroom.

Further details and booking here.

Leadership Open Day

The concept of an evidence-informed school’ is one that is a popular discussion topic at present. This workshop will take the form of an extended case study, explore how we have worked towards this here at Durrington.

Led by Shaun Allison, it will be on 18th June 2020. Details and booking here.

researchED Durrington

The brilliant researchED movement, founded by Tom Bennett, comes to Durrington on 25th April 2020. This one day conference will bring together some of the very best thinkers in education, who will be talking about how research can be brought to life in the classroom. If you’ve been to a researchED conference before, you will know they are not to be missed. If you haven’t – please do come along. You will leave feeling inspired, energised and professionally enriched (the food is great too!)
