We know that the pandemic has had a disproportionate effect on children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and that schools will be doing everything in their power to mitigate the long-term impact this has on these pupils’ learning and life chances.

The EEF’s new pupil premium guide aims to support teachers and school leaders to achieve this by providing a practical starting point to help them formulate meaningful, actionable, and measurable pupil premium strategies appropriate for their context, and underpinned by high quality educational evidence.

The guide – which is free to download from the EEF’s website – continues to recommend a tiered approach to Pupil Premium spending, which encourages schools to consider balanced approaches to improving teaching, providing suitable targeted academic support and adopting wider strategies to overcome non-academic challenges.

The guide has also been updated to include a revised, four step cycle to assist with developing, implementing and monitoring an evidence-informed approach to pupil premium strategy.
