Effective feedback is a crucial component of high-quality teaching, enabling practitioners to support pupil progress, build learning and address misunderstandings.

The Education Endowment Foundation’s (EEF) latest guidance report — Teacher Feedback to Improve Pupil Learning— reviews the best available research to offer schools six recommendations to support teachers in delivering meaningful feedback.

The first three recommendations focus on the key principles which underpin successful feedback, such as its being based on strong foundations and ensuring that it is designed to move learning forward.

The report – which is free to download from the EEF’s website – also provides guidance on deciding suitable methods for delivering feedback, and successful implementation of feedback policies.

This guidance report sits alongside the EEF’s other guidance reports – focused on maths, metacognition, effective implementation and making best use of teaching assistants – providing the basis for an overall advance towards evidence-informed school improvement.
