Taking on a leadership role for the first time — whether academic or pastoral — brings both opportunity and challenge. This course is designed specifically for those who have recently stepped into leadership positions for the first time.
Over three full-day sessions, we will focus on the core leadership behaviours, principles, and mindsets that underpin successful leadership in schools. While NPQs offer a strong foundation in leadership theory, this course builds on that by equipping you with the practical tools, habits, and strategies needed to lead effectively in your day-to-day role.
Between sessions, you’ll be encouraged to apply what you’ve learned through gap tasks focused on your own leadership context. You’ll also be directed to subject- or role-specific resources so you can translate core leadership principles into meaningful action in your area.
> Leadership Identity- understanding your values, role and remit> Turning data into action– interpreting data with purpose to identify clear, evidence-informed priorities
> Strategic action planning- writing strategic, measurable, and realistic action plans that drive improvement and secure impact
> Building systems for accountability– designing structures to monitor progress, evaluate effectiveness, and sustain outcomes, understanding accountability without micromanagement.
> Leading behaviour change– Using practical tools to build buy-in and shift habits within your team or area
> Having challenging conversations– developing confidence and clarity when navigating difficult discussions
> Responsive coaching strategies– combining research and practical experience to build an approach that adapts to meet the needs of individual teachers.
> Organisational Management- introduction to budget management and resource allocation
