This session is based on the Language Comprehension’ strand of Scarborough’s Reading Rope and on the far end of the rope – reading fluency. We will explore approaches to support pupils of all ages to gain meaning from texts, from our youngest learners enjoying shared reading experiences to Year 6 pupils demonstrating their comprehension skills through writing under timed conditions.

The session will include:

· Key research insights from three EEF Literacy Guidance Reports: Preparing for Literacy, Improving Literacy in KS1 and Improving Literacy in KS2

· A focus on diagnostic assessment and teaching approaches to support our most vulnerable learners to make progress

· Practical implications to support implementation

· Case studies from schools affiliated with Derby Research School
