Derby Research School

Research Schools Network

Derby Research School is based at Wyndham Spencer Academy, an outstanding primary school serving an area of high social and economic challenge based in inner-city Derby.

Our transformation is characterised by being outward facing and engaged in evidence-based practice. Exploring what the research shows works best has allowed us to make a difference for our pupils in our context.

We are the leading hub for evidence-based educational practice, dedicated to supporting schools in the Derby area and beyond. As part of the national Research Schools Network, we provide expert guidance, training, and resources to help educators integrate the latest research into their teaching. Through a range of communication events, exemplification material and bespoke professional development, we hope to empower teachers and leaders to make informed, evidence-based decisions that improve pupil outcomes and drive sustainable school improvement.

We are excited to be able to offer immersion days at Wyndham Spencer Academy where we support schools in being able to engage with research and translate evidence into tangible next steps for teaching and learning. If you are interested in visiting us please do contact our Derby Research Team below.

Evidence Leaders in Education

What is an ELE and what do they do?

An Evidence Leader in Education (ELE) for the Research School Network plays a vital role in bridging the gap between research and classroom practice. They are experienced educators trained to help schools implement evidence-based strategies to improve teaching and learning. ELEs support professional development, provide guidance on interpreting research, and work with school leaders to drive sustainable improvement. Through workshops, coaching, and tailored advice, they ensure that schools can access, understand, and apply the latest educational research to enhance student outcomes. ELEs can be commissioned to work as system leaders in their subject field across our research school network.

An Evidence Advocate in Education for the Research School Network is a passionate educator dedicated to promoting the use of evidence-based practices in their schools and networks. They serve as champions of research-informed teaching methods, helping colleagues understand and apply educational research to enhance classroom outcomes. Through collaboration, training, and sharing insights, Evidence Advocates inspire a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth in their schools and networks, ensuring that the best available evidence shapes decision-making and drives success for both teachers and students.
