At Dixons Music Primary (DMP), we believe that every pupil should feel a sense of belonging – a connection to themselves, others, and the broader school community. Building this culture of community is more than just a philosophy at DMP, it is embedded in our daily timetable.
The EEF recommend that we ‘build a culture of community and belonging for pupils’ by:
One of the most effective ways we foster this is through our unique Family Dining experience.
A sense of family
Lunchtime at DMP is not just about eating – it’s about creating a sense of family. Family Dining is an integral part of our ethos and is designed to support every pupil, especially the most vulnerable. It is where our school community, from Reception right through to Year 6, truly comes together.
During Family Dining, all pupils and staff, including teaching and associate staff, sit together to eat. The experience ensures that every pupil feels valued through contribution with practical responsibilities such as serving food, setting tables, or tidying up. Each table hosts ten pupils, with staff providing additional support. While dining, every pupil has someone to talk to, ensuring no one feels left out. Time is also built in for building authentic connections between pupil-pupil and pupil-staff as well as opportunity for self-reflection and appreciation of others. As pupils progress through the year groups, they take on greater responsibilities, helping them develop independence and confidence.
A sense of accomplishment
Pupils take pride in meaningful tasks like serving food or setting tables. These roles not only teach responsibility but also boost confidence and instil a sense of accomplishment. Everyone eats the same meal, sits together, and shares the same experience. This feeling of sameness is particularly powerful for our most vulnerable pupils as it breaks down social barriers and ensures every pupil feels valued.
For many, Family Dining is the highlight of their day. One pupil shared, “We all sit together, we all have the same meal, everyone is the same.” Another pupil emphasised the unique connection it creates, “It feels more natural, like we’re one big happy family.”
Family Dining also plays a pivotal role in strengthening relationships between staff and pupils. By eating together, pupils and staff connect on a personal level. Conversations flow naturally, whether about football, weekend activities, or shared interests. These interactions build trust, understanding, and authenticity. These moments help foster trust and connection, as one pupil described, “We get to talk to the staff about anything — it feels like they’re part of our family.” This shared experience creates a sense of community that resonates with both pupils and staff.
A sense of community
At Dixons Music Primary, Family Dining is a cornerstone of our school community. It is a celebration of belonging, responsibility, and connection. Creating a space where every pupil feels valued, appreciated, and included ensures we are building an inclusive, supportive school community that welcomes every pupil into school life.
