Research-based training – translating evidence into practice one bite at a time

It was about five months ago that Megan Dixon (@damsoned), the co-director of the Aspirer Research School, suggested I submit an abstract to the Chartered College of Teaching Impact Magazine looking at cultural capital. I had just finished co-leading a new training format with schools in North Yorkshire that focused on translating literacy research into practical ideas for the classroom. It was a great course and I really enjoyed being a part of it so I thought I’d give the article a go. I submitted my abstract and thought nothing of it for a while. To my surprise, they asked me to submit my full article so, after many attempts during a tiring summer term; I completed it and sent it off.

Fast-forward through the summer and my article ended up in the Impact Magazine Arts, creativity and cultural education: Developing pedagogy, principles and practice.’ The article can be accessed here: https://impact.chartered.college/article/research-based-training-evidence-into-practice/

I was very proud to see my name in print and it has encouraged me to look for other opportunities to write and share the good practice that goes on throughout the Aspirer Research School.

Following the article, I was approached by Rebecca Nobes (@BexN91) to appear on her podcast From page to practice’ (#PagePracticePodcast). I had to record a short piece about my article and the importance of translating research into practice. It was quite a struggle as no one like listening to themselves on record but after a few takes I sent it over and Rebecca turned it, and recordings from others who had written articles, into a really good episode for her podcast.
