Over the past two years, teachers and school leaders have worked tirelessly to mitigate the negative impacts of the pandemic on the children and young people in their care. As schools strategise and implement their approach to educational recovery, is more important than ever that they have access to the information they need to make sure that their efforts and resources are suitably targeted.

Today the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has published two brand new resources designed to support schools with their response to the pandemic.

The EEF’s new evidence review of the impact of Covid-19 on pupil learning summarises existing research, bringing together findings from a broad range of robust studies to create a clearer understanding of how partial school closures have affected children nationally.

The report shows that COVID-19-related disruptions have worsened educational inequalities: the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers has grown since the onset of the pandemic.

So, as the new academic year approaches, how can schools make sure that their approach is given the best possible chance of getting pupils back on track to achieving their potential?

The EEF has also published by a new planning guide, which offers practical insights to help school leaders plan for the ongoing recovery of all pupils, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The guide is designed to support teachers and school leaders in identifying and addressing the key areas for development in their setting, signposting evidence-informed resources on a variety of areas of teaching practice.
