Using Question Level Analysis to Understand Patterns in Learning Across School

Jo Munro – Yr 6 Teacher and KS2 lead explains how setting up a simple spreadsheet for her colleagues to use has helped her diagnose areas of strength and weakness in the maths teaching across the key stage;

I set up a spreadsheet for staff this year to analyse the maths results from the PIRA papers or sample SATs papers (yr2/6). The spreadsheet highlighted the type of question and the grouping of the question and then by each child’s name we indicated if they scored on that type of question. By working out the percentage of children achieving a correct answer on each question we could see where the gaps were and the areas which were often misunderstood. From this starting point as a staff, we were then able to plan our professional development, identify areas to research further, look at planning and intervention needs going forward. We are now looking closely at the misconceptions the children have in these areas and will adjust our teaching as necessary
